Thousands of business books are published every year— Here are the best of the best
After years of reading, evaluating, and selling business books, Jack Covert and Todd Sattersten are among the most respected experts on the category. Now they have chosen and reviewed the one hundred best business titles of all time—the ones that deliver the biggest payoff for today’s busy readers.
The 100 Best Business Books of All Time puts each book in context so that readers can quickly find solutions to the problems they face, such as how best to spend The First 90 Days in a new job or how to take their company from Good to Great. Many of the choices are surprising—you’ll find reviews of Moneyball and Orbiting the Giant Hairball, but not Jack Welch’s memoir.
At the end of each review, Jack and Todd direct readers to other books both inside and outside The 100 Best. And sprinkled throughout are sidebars taking the reader beyond business books, suggesting movies, novels, and even children’s books that offer equally relevant insights.
This guide will appeal to anyone, from entry-level to CEO, who wants to cut through the clutter and discover the brilliant books that are truly worth their investment of time and money.

The 100 Best Business Books of all Time
If you are in business for yourself, and you do not read daily from this book, then you are losing customers and money. This book has brief concise 2-3 page chapters
packed with wisdom from the best books on marketing and business out there. Reading and absorbing one chapter a day, or even every few days, will give you the cutting edge over competitors. It makes thinking outside the box much easier. This book was
not a choice pick by me--Amazon recommended it to me to get to free shipping. Thank you Amazon. This book should be on your desk and used frequently. The reading sparks ideas that aid in the selling process--and we all know how important sales are in today's climate.

Why the need for the obvious black remainder mark???
Despite the fact this hardcover edition was released barely over a years ago, it has already been classified as an Amazon Bargain Book. This is usually an honor reserved for so-so books but this book has been roundly lauded by critics, bloggers, even my friends. Don't misunderstand me... bargain books are GREAT from a price perspective...but I bought this as a birthday gift for a friend and was really disappointed when I saw the in my face black remainder mark on the bottom page edges. When I reviewed the product description, I did indeed see that Amazon cautioned that there might be a small publisher's mark, but I missed this little caveat and didn't expect it on a brand new book so recently released. If I'd have caught the disclaimer, I'd have spent the extra few bucks for a truly new copy of the book that is also available on Amazon for the gift. Then I'd have bought a beat up used copy for myself.

A worthy buy
I highly recommend this book. I use it as a reference on which book I should read next. The book gives you a to-the-point summary on the many worthy selections in different categories: e.g.
1 YOU
2 LEADERSHIP
3 STRATEGY
4 SALES & MARKETING
5 RULES & SCOREKEEPING
6 MANAGEMENT
7 BIOGRAPHIES
8 ENTREPRENEURSHIP
9 NARRATIVES
10 INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY
11 BIG IDEAS
12 TAKEWAYS
I personally picked up a lot of books after reading the summaries. If you are looking into a book that saves you time from reading 100 books... you can also pick this book up, however, to get the most out of the book(s), I recommend reading the book(s).

Just what I had been looking for
Thank you Jack and Todd. Finally, I found a book that compiles the best of the best in a meaningful and thoughtful way. This book is very well organized with twelve chapters on twelve pertinent business topics to choose from depending on your area of interest. There is something here for everyone whether you are trying to solve a business problem, increase your depth of knowledge or strengthen your skillset.
The first chapter is the all important YOU followed by leadership, strategy, sales & marketing, rules and scorekeeping -- well you will just have to read it. I loved the fact that with only a couple of exceptions the books recommended were under 300 pages. Given our premium on time, that was a plus. However much we are interested in the topic, so many business books contain unnecessary filler material.
Some of these books you will have read as part of your MBA experience but this presents an opportunity to revisit some of those messages you may want to refresh. I was impressed by the fact that they even included children's books such as "Oh, the Places you will go" and some fables. That reminded me of that other book: "Everything I Ever Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten". How true that is. Including side bars recommending additional books, movies and even speeches further enhanced the experience.
I downloaded this book onto my kindle. While I was reading it, if I ran across a compelling book based on their review, I simply downloaded a sample to see if indeed I wanted to buy it, add to my wishlist or save for another time. I am currently reading "Chasing Daylight." What a story and a message that contains!

Its an advertisement
I was hoping for a summary of the best business books, so I didn't have to read them, or at least would only bother to read the ones I was more interested in. However, this book is basically 100 ads for other books, in addition to an ad for the author's book company. The descriptions of the books aren't anything more informative then the back cover of the book. You'd be better off just reading the amazon descriptions of the books listed instead of reading this book.

Smart Ball follows Major League Baseball's history as a sport, a domestic monopoly, a neocolonial power, and an international business. MLB's challenge has been to market its popular mythology as the national pastime with pastoral, populist roots while addressing the management challenges of competing with other sports and diversions in a burgeoning global economy.
Baseball researcher Robert F. Lewis II argues that MLB for years abused its legal insulation and monopoly status through arrogant treatment of its fans and players and static management of its business. As its privileged position eroded eroded in the face of increased competition from other sports and union resistance, it awakened to its perilous predicament and began aggressively courting athletes and fans at home and abroad.
Using a detailed marketing analysis and applying the principles of a "smart power" model, the author assesses MLB's progression as a global business brand that continues to appeal to a consumer's sense of an idyllic past in the midst of a fast-paced, and often violent, present.

Smart Ball: Marketing the Myth and Managing the Reality of Major League Baseball
Robert Lewis' extremely well-written book provides an informative history of baseball. He presents baseball as a sport, as a domestic monopoly, as an neocolonial power, and as an international business. Lewis expertly describes how Major League Baseball has faced the challenges of preserving and enhancing its mythical mystique, while managing a business that complicates and contradicts its mythology. I highly recommend this fascinating account of a sport that has played a part in all of our lives.

Smart Ball
Lewis' Smart Ball is a well written and intelligent approach to the business of baseball. Scholars and laymen alike will learn a great deal about how our national pasttime has evolved into a global enterprise. The chapter on the development of the baseball monopoly is particularly enlightening.

A different kind of book on baseball.
This book is unlike any other baseball book I have read. Rather than being one more look at the game's ever increasing list of heroes (or more recently, juiced-up bums)and their statistically described achievements, or the complicated field strategies which define managers, it delves into the business side of the game, and not always in a positive manner. Lewis seems to have done his homework well. The intellectual heft of his subject is impressive. This is not a book for the casual baseball aficionado, but rather one for the fan who want a deeper understanding of what really makes baseball tick.

Definitive
There are some things one knows intuitively, but have no way of documenting or validating. Bob Lewis did the research, and now I can offer, in collegiate conversation, his scholarship about baseball and its economic history. This is a fine way to supplement your stats-factoids with substantive narrative.

Throughout much of the twentieth century, the American corporation was looked to as a bedrock of stability and security, a benevolent institution whose power and influence was a trusted force in business and society alike. For better or worse, this corporation no longer exists. The intensified competition produced by globalization, deregulation, and information technology, along with slowed growth and economic flux, have profoundly altered corporate America's relationship with employees, shareholders, communities, government, and society. New World, New Rules is a compelling chronicle of the American corporation's changing role, as well as a perceptive look at what these changes mean for both business and public policy.
Author Marina Whitman shares both personal experiences and in-depth research from her distinguished career as a business leader, government adviser, teacher, and influential corporate strategist. One of the first women appointed to a major corporate board, a former vice president at General Motors, and a former member of the President's Council of Economic Advisers, Whitman is currently a director of five major multinational corporations and a renowned scholar of economics and public policy. Here is the remarkable account of what she has observed during a period of unprecedented business upheaval.
As it surveys the uncertain new relationship between American business and American society, New World, New Rules challenges our companies and our government to consider new practices and policies that will contribute to corporate viability as well as to the health of American society.
Amazon.com Review:
New World, New Rules looks at the sweeping changes in the American economy caused by global competition, deregulation, technology, and the rise of power on Wall Street. Author Marina Whitman demonstrates how these developments are radically reshaping the ways big companies deal with their employees and their communities. Whitman, a business professor at the University of Michigan and former chief economist for General Motors Corporation, writes that major companies can no longer be paternalistic pillars of their cities and towns. They must now be lean, global competitors--always eyeing profits, even when it comes to charitable promotions. While America has discovered the upsides of the international economy--more productive workers and more choice and better prices for consumers--the downsides aren't all that comforting: employees can't count on secure jobs and managers are often wracked by short-term thinking. But for American companies and their employees, there's no turning back. After a period of painful downsizing, U.S. corporations are now the most competitive in the world. However, Whitman argues that policymakers and business leaders can mitigate many of the ill effects of America's newfound competitiveness by making health insurance more portable and allocating more tax dollars for job training in new technologies. For students, business leaders, and policy makers. --Dan Ring

Thanks, we know the illness -- how about the cure?
I don't want to sound critical, but it looks like this book is written for a blue-collar Michael Moore-style person who cannot understand why in the world his town is in shambles, and, well, I don't think this book would convince Michael Moore that this is how it is supposed to be. Marina first tells the evident -- that corporations are not that benevolent now as they used to be (well, if you consider their old state as 'benevolence', which is a completely separate discussion, of course) and then tries to prove that this is how it is supposed to be. Well, let see, if somebody has an illness and it is not cured, the person dies. That's natural. But you can try to cure it, right? Not just state that dying is natural? So, where is the cure? Marina does not have it. Suggestions of portable life insurance and more tax dollars for retraining may be a pain killer at some time -- albeit not very powerful -- but hardly a cure.

Small Business Startup Guide
I read this book and felt more comfortable about starting a small business. The book is informative about the many tasks that one needs to pay attention to. The book gave me several ideas and helped me determine where I need to concentrate my efforts. For the price this book is an excellent resource for starting a business and I would highly recommend it.
