Foreword by Ralph Nader. In Corporation Nation Derber addresses the unchecked power of today’s corporations to shape the way we work, earn, buy, sell, and think—the very way we live. Huge, far-reaching mergers are now commonplace, downsizing is rampant, and our lines of communication, news and entertainment media, jobs, and savings are increasingly controlled by a handful of global—and unaccountable—conglomerates. We are, in effect, losing our financial and emotional security, depending more than ever on the whim of these corporations. But it doesn’t have to be this way, as this book makes clear. Just as the original Populist movement of the nineteenth century helped dethrone the robber barons, Derber contends that a new, positive populism can help the U.S. workforce regain its self-control.
Drawing on core sociological concepts and demonstrating the power of the sociological imagination, he calls for revisions in our corporate system, changes designed to keep corporations healthy while also making them answerable to the people. From rewriting corporate charters to altering consumer habits, Derber offers new aims for businesses and empowering strategies by which we all can make a difference.

Take This Medication an Hour Before or Two Hours After Eating
... or you will throw up.
It's that depressing, folks.
Not the book, but what it speaks of.

Unbelievably Brilliant!
I don't give top ratings lightly, but this book is breathtakingly well written and carries a powerful message. Any given chapter is a great eye-opener to how our society works and what's REALLY going on in the world around us... with all the distractions stripped away.
Unlike Arianna Huffington's "Pigs at the Trough," which consists entirely of disjointed anecdotes on "what's bad," this book tackles the underlying reasons for WHY it's bad. Corporations have quietly and efficiently consolidated their economic muscle and merged it with political power--witness the everyday complaint that Special Interests hold sway in Washington. But as Derber shows, few are willing to make the obvious connection--that the problem is not simply government per se, but unrestrained corporate power.
And Derber is no hippie anti-capitalist wacko, either. He acknowledges that globalization is inevitable, but simply notes that we need to ensure it's the right KIND of globalization... the kind that's accountable to the public and that serves the public good. For all the conservative and libertarian whining about how the evil UN represents a "loss of U.S. sovereignty," notice that they never say a word about the WTO and similar business deals that have _already_ undermined our sovereignty, setting up arrangements that subordinate our laws to corporate profits--all with zero accountability to anyone but the executives and stockholders.
This books outlines real, practical solutions for putting the brakes on corporate power while still promoting economic growth and profitability. Environmentalists and unions don't HAVE to be at odds, not when they can unite against the common enemy and take positive action to force corporations into their proper, subordinate role to public government.

Maybe good for beginners
If you haven't read any other critiques of corporate power, this isn't a bad introduction. It covers the basics adequately (deregulation, privatization, monopolies, anti-unionism), but you have to wade through prose like "The language of responsibility -- rather than accountability or democracy -- reflects the depoliticizing of a movement that claims to speak for empowerment." For more experienced readers, I would recommend "The Corporation" by Joel Bakan.

Verbose unstructured rambling
The essence of the book is "corporations behave badly". I happen to agree but I don't need 339 pages to tell me this. I was hoping to learn something here. I was hoping for some history of how corporations developed. Nothing of the kind. Just a comparison to the gilded age (late 1800s) repeated throughout the book that is obvious to anyone who knows American history. Those liberals who love to read long winded tirades that support their point of view may enjoy this book. But if you aren't a liberal or if you are a liberal with a brain, this book will bore you to tears.

An easy read that includes consumer responsibility.
This is a book that shoud be read by anyone who is in the least bit interested in global economic affairs, sweatshop-labor, and flight of capital.Charles Derber gives an excellent description of the history of corporations within the United States and elsewhere as well as timeline leading into what they have become. He advocates careful legislation, but more importantly - grassroots activism. His solutions include educated consumerism, socially-responsible investing, and cooperation of non-profits.This book is an easy read that doesn't require an MBA to understand - it should be required reading for political economics courses.

Who owns our economic future?
No one knows the answer for sure, but Joseph Quinlan provides some very compelling ideas.
In The Last Economic Superpower, the chief market strategist for Bank of America's Global Wealth and Investment Management unit meticulously examines governmental and business reactions to the recent recession. He argues compellingly that globalization and free-market capitalism are in retreat—and that major alterations to present strategies are necessary to avoid an economic “cold war.” The solution, Quinlan asserts, is a cooperative effort on the part of the United States with emerging countries, such as China, to shape a new economy that promotes world-wide economic growth and reduces the risks of wars and cross-border conflicts.
Sure to stand among the most important and influential books about the global economy in recent years, The Last Economic Superpower offers key insight into the subject from one of the few authors qualified to provide it.

Thousands of business books are published every year— Here are the best of the best
After years of reading, evaluating, and selling business books, Jack Covert and Todd Sattersten are among the most respected experts on the category. Now they have chosen and reviewed the one hundred best business titles of all time—the ones that deliver the biggest payoff for today’s busy readers.
The 100 Best Business Books of All Time puts each book in context so that readers can quickly find solutions to the problems they face, such as how best to spend The First 90 Days in a new job or how to take their company from Good to Great. Many of the choices are surprising—you’ll find reviews of Moneyball and Orbiting the Giant Hairball, but not Jack Welch’s memoir.
At the end of each review, Jack and Todd direct readers to other books both inside and outside The 100 Best. And sprinkled throughout are sidebars taking the reader beyond business books, suggesting movies, novels, and even children’s books that offer equally relevant insights.
This guide will appeal to anyone, from entry-level to CEO, who wants to cut through the clutter and discover the brilliant books that are truly worth their investment of time and money.

The 100 Best Business Books of all Time
If you are in business for yourself, and you do not read daily from this book, then you are losing customers and money. This book has brief concise 2-3 page chapters
packed with wisdom from the best books on marketing and business out there. Reading and absorbing one chapter a day, or even every few days, will give you the cutting edge over competitors. It makes thinking outside the box much easier. This book was
not a choice pick by me--Amazon recommended it to me to get to free shipping. Thank you Amazon. This book should be on your desk and used frequently. The reading sparks ideas that aid in the selling process--and we all know how important sales are in today's climate.

Why the need for the obvious black remainder mark???
Despite the fact this hardcover edition was released barely over a years ago, it has already been classified as an Amazon Bargain Book. This is usually an honor reserved for so-so books but this book has been roundly lauded by critics, bloggers, even my friends. Don't misunderstand me... bargain books are GREAT from a price perspective...but I bought this as a birthday gift for a friend and was really disappointed when I saw the in my face black remainder mark on the bottom page edges. When I reviewed the product description, I did indeed see that Amazon cautioned that there might be a small publisher's mark, but I missed this little caveat and didn't expect it on a brand new book so recently released. If I'd have caught the disclaimer, I'd have spent the extra few bucks for a truly new copy of the book that is also available on Amazon for the gift. Then I'd have bought a beat up used copy for myself.

A worthy buy
I highly recommend this book. I use it as a reference on which book I should read next. The book gives you a to-the-point summary on the many worthy selections in different categories: e.g.
1 YOU
2 LEADERSHIP
3 STRATEGY
4 SALES & MARKETING
5 RULES & SCOREKEEPING
6 MANAGEMENT
7 BIOGRAPHIES
8 ENTREPRENEURSHIP
9 NARRATIVES
10 INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY
11 BIG IDEAS
12 TAKEWAYS
I personally picked up a lot of books after reading the summaries. If you are looking into a book that saves you time from reading 100 books... you can also pick this book up, however, to get the most out of the book(s), I recommend reading the book(s).

Just what I had been looking for
Thank you Jack and Todd. Finally, I found a book that compiles the best of the best in a meaningful and thoughtful way. This book is very well organized with twelve chapters on twelve pertinent business topics to choose from depending on your area of interest. There is something here for everyone whether you are trying to solve a business problem, increase your depth of knowledge or strengthen your skillset.
The first chapter is the all important YOU followed by leadership, strategy, sales & marketing, rules and scorekeeping -- well you will just have to read it. I loved the fact that with only a couple of exceptions the books recommended were under 300 pages. Given our premium on time, that was a plus. However much we are interested in the topic, so many business books contain unnecessary filler material.
Some of these books you will have read as part of your MBA experience but this presents an opportunity to revisit some of those messages you may want to refresh. I was impressed by the fact that they even included children's books such as "Oh, the Places you will go" and some fables. That reminded me of that other book: "Everything I Ever Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten". How true that is. Including side bars recommending additional books, movies and even speeches further enhanced the experience.
I downloaded this book onto my kindle. While I was reading it, if I ran across a compelling book based on their review, I simply downloaded a sample to see if indeed I wanted to buy it, add to my wishlist or save for another time. I am currently reading "Chasing Daylight." What a story and a message that contains!

Its an advertisement
I was hoping for a summary of the best business books, so I didn't have to read them, or at least would only bother to read the ones I was more interested in. However, this book is basically 100 ads for other books, in addition to an ad for the author's book company. The descriptions of the books aren't anything more informative then the back cover of the book. You'd be better off just reading the amazon descriptions of the books listed instead of reading this book.
