You can't touch it or feel it. Sometimes you can't even see it. Yet, intellectual property continues to soar in value, comprising an increasingly greater portion of a typical company's assets. In the age of instant global communication, understanding what intellectual property is, how to protect it, and how to enhance its value are prerequisites for corporate survival.
Enter attorney Deborah E. Bouchoux and her informative book, Protecting Your Company's Intellectual Property. Packed with fascinating and illuminating examples, this book is a succinct, yet comprehensive discussion of the four key areas of intellectual property: trademarks * copyrights * patents * trade secrets.
In addition to defining these areas (for instance, did you know that customer lists and marketing plans are protectable trade secrets?), the book offers practical tools for protecting intellectual property, including:
* Trademark and copyright application forms
* Sample employment agreements
* An Internet usage policy
* Tips on preventing unauthorized dissemination of information via the Web
* A guide for conducting an IP audit, and much more.

Excellent IP overview for managers and investors
This book offers a comprehensive overview of intellectual property issues, suitable for (among others) high-tech executives, entrepreneurs, and investors in early stage companies (all of which describe me). Its coverage includes trademarks (6 chapters, 70 pages), copyrights (5 chapters, 68 pages), patents (4 chapters, 40 pages), and trade secrets (1 chapter, 18 pages), plus chapters on unfair competition, owning IP created by employees and independent contractors, and conducting internal IP audits. I have experience with software copyrights and biotechnology patents; this book is fairly strong on the former, but only briefly mentions the latter. The material on internal IP audits is rather brief (12 pages) but includes a fairly good audit checklist, and an action plan for protecting a company's IP; also, the first chapter should be required reading for managers, since it points out the many places in a business where valuable IP may be found, department by department.The writing is very clear -- certainly not "obtuse" as one reviewer claimed -- and the book is quite current, with good coverage of the Internet's impact on copyright and other IP issues, and coverage of recent changes in the law such as the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. The book is a high-level overview for managers rather than a lawyer's or practitioner's guide, but it does describe the application process for trademarks, copyrights, and patents, all in reasonable detail. Yet this book is just 250 pages of highly readable text -- not a huge tome -- which I think makes it suitable for managers, early stage investors, or board members, especially in high-tech companies.

Save the money
I found this book very obtuse and thought the author tried to make this subject much more difficult than it really is. Save your money.

Highly Recommended!
In the interests of safety, we'll refrain from quoting this fine book by Deborah E. Bouchoux, a specialist in intellectual property who teamed with AMACOM to create that rarest of volumes: a straightforward book about law that is simple to read (it's a formula she should patent). This comprehensive volume covers the nuts and bolts of U.S. patent and trademark law. It also gives advice on how to protect your intellectual property and avoid infringement, and reports on the latest patent trends in high tech. Of most concern for general business managers, Bouchoux reviews how (and why) to conduct intellectual property audits within your organization. With intellectual property emerging as the new corporate treasure of the knowledge economy, we [...] suggest that research and development managers and executives of every stripe study this volume carefully. Why should your attorney be the only one who understands what you really own?

Generally solid material, but not what you expect
When you purchase a book that boldly pronounces: "DOUBLE YOUR INCOME IN REAL ESTATE" you probably think it's about doubling your income, right? Not exactly, at least, not with this book. Danielle Kennedy gets us started lethargically and only begins to get into some of the "meat and potatoes" the last half of the book. We begin with a lengthy chapter about tapping into your goals, desires, and will power, followed by another tedious chapter about your life and money, followed by still another chapter on the history of homeownership. By the fourth chapter, readers clamoring to double their incomes are asked to wait a while longer while Ms. Kennedy primarily addresses brokers and owners for another sixty pages. Finally, by chapter five, nearly halfway through the text, we begin to hear what the title told us we would.To Ms. Kennedy's credit, most of what she has to say is valuable and worthwhile. If you can buckle down and actually get through the 120 pages of preliminary info, you will have a nice idea about your goals, your money, your health, and the history of real estate. After that, her techniques, while generally of the tried-and-true book of tricks, are nonetheless important. She does a nice job of explaining them consisely and offering some new ideas.Ms. Kennedy also has a lot to say about diet and exercise, as well as how to motivate fellow salespeople. Some of this comes off as "motherly" and even a bit soft-sounding. It leaves you wondering if she truly has both feet set in the real world, or rather prefers to live in an idealized pseudo-reality. It would be nice if Ms. Kennedy's "model office" existed anywhere in real life.The sad part is, the author has abandoned real estate sales for (perhaps?) the more lucrative area of writing books and speaking publically. I personally do not like to read books from individuals who abandoned their sales careers, but this should not deter you from picking up her book. To her credit, she does not come off as some kind of get-rich-quick guru and her advice is sound and generally timeless. For a great back to basics book with a catchy (but not necessarily 100% accurate) title, consider this as a worthwhile read.

Food For Thought
A well written and practical book for the real estate practioner. Kennedy in her usual style approaches her subject material in a straight forward and common sense manner. Her advice and insight clearly stems from her years of experience as a realtor in the trenches. I rate this book as a must read for anyone wanting to enhance or increase their income with real estate sales while seeking to obtain a more balanced lifestyle. J.L. Wall, Knoxville, Tennessee

Reader friendly business book
I have read several books on small businesses and this one is the most reader friendly I have seen in a while. As an artist, I am not a business oriented kind of person, but it is still important for me to know the basic rules of marketing my work and how to discipline myself. The Big Book of Small Business" had MANY great suggestions that were not only helpful for trying to run a small business, but also to my relationships with people in every day life. Highly recommended!

Advanced plans for small business owners
When I first started my small massage practice I admit this book overwhelmed me a bit. Now that I'm more established and comfortable in my business I pulled this book back out for more advanced tips and planning. If you are looking to improve an established business or increase your leadership skills this book is exactly what you need. One of the best business guides yet.

Quality and service when I purchased my book
I was impressed with the quick turaround of my order as well as the quality of the book when I received it. I would use this resource agian.

Small Business start-up
From a tactile standpoint, this book is great. The binding is well constructed, and the print is slightly large and easy to read. I actually rented it from the library first. But aftere reading the first 2 chapters I knew I had to own it. I am using a highlighter in the book. It's a great overview of everything you need to know to open up a business (or if you are thinking about it).
This book offers a quick business overview and is also an excellent reference tool. Worth the money.
